What is a DPF?

The DPF is the trash can for the emissions system. Occasionally it needs to be emptied. As with the trash can at your house, when you jam trash in and then stomp on it so that you can fit more in, it becomes a challenge to get it out.

DPFs are an important component of the exhaust aftertreatment system. The aftertreatment system cleans up particles and exhaust gases (nitrogen oxide), impacting performance as little as possible. The DPF removes larger particulate matter from the exhaust stream. The DPF does a remarkable job at this as it typically removes over 99% of particulates. This explains why the DPF can get such a thick layer of soot and ash.

When your truck’s DPF becomes clogged, it’s like your truck has indigestion. Before long you have reduced efficiency and decreased engine performance, and ultimately your expensive emission components are damaged.

In service DPF failures are expensive. Direct costs include towing and DPF replacement. Other costs include loss of engine performance – up to 4% MPG loss as well as reduced horsepower.

Another contributing factor to premature engine overhaul is engine block heat retention. This is caused by constant chronic backflow from a clogged aftertreatment. The backpressure makes it difficult for the engine to vent its heat. Too much heat shortens the life of the engine.
